anyone give me some hints here to pinpoint so i am not rambling through the mess of wires under my dash cause previous owner jumbled it up my flashers stay on when i click the turn signal on and battery gauge drops down and lights fade start to smell burning smell brake lights work but only when brake pedal is pushed marker lights dont work at all only when turnsignal is applied but turnsignal doesnt flash.......
Sounds to me like you have a bad ground somewhere. I had numerous similar issues and that is pretty much what it was. You need to find a schematic and trace all of your wires. It sucks, but works.
thanks i found out it was in that area anyhow when i was headed home with it last night and i had a big puff of smoke come from under the dash i got a rewireing kit from advanced it was the power wire from the turnsignals and from the running lights in the wireharness ..... the whole thing was electrical taped cut and spliced bare wires here and there ..... i feel lady luck was a bad name for this truck i love it to death but i keep having issues with it but i guess its to be expected from a poorly maintained 30some year old truck at this rate my restoration will never get done all i got done now is the motor as far as the reliability rebuild, i have a second 351m sitting torn apart waiting for dished wiesco pistons, rings, berrings, 270.290 duration motherthumper cam, stroker kit, sleeves, gt40 heads, rollerrockers, and the turbokit... all i got now is the rods, lifters, valves springs, timing chain, hi psi carbgaskets, electronic, distributor, and msd ignition kit
I know it's a tough nut to swallow, but a new harness kit is about $700. It comes with new switches and everything. I choked at the price, but if you think about how all the original ends and wire ages/corrodes/gets hacked over time/etc. plus the possibility of your truck catching on fire, if you plan on keeping and driving it the harness can be like a new lease on life for the truck.
The headlights are unreal too; if you measure the voltage at the battery and then turn on the headlights and measure the voltage at the bulb the amount of resistance the harness consumes can be 1 - 3 volts -- just causing the wires and switches to heat up and eat up your power.
If she's starting to have smoke coming out of the dash and you're not replacing the harness at least make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy; you definitely don't want to watch it burn if the harness catches on fire.
yeah i think its a route i gotta take cause i just spent all day cutting out old wires and putting in new replacements but im missing something somewhere it doesnt burn anymore but now i have an issue with the fact only the headlights work front fourways and drivers turnsignal and i followed the diagrams for the truck and hooked everything up right i think im just gonna redo all the hard wiring from the lights to the interior that way its done and fresh i would of had to do it anyhow during the resto
well i got most of it figured out but im still working on rear flashers and turnsignals fourways work nicely up front and so do all the marker lights and driving lights just having issues figuring out the rest wish me luck

Hey Talltruck, are you talking about the Painless kit? I'm looking at replacing every wire in my truck when the body comes off -- everything is crispy and old. Are there any other kits available?
Kongslibakken - did the ez-wiring kit come with all the ends? Is it complete or just the under-dash portion? I looked at their website, but it's more of a 'book end' than an 'encyclopedia'...
