I'm new to the forum here, but not exactly new to the 73-79 dentsides. Really enjoy reading all the good info on here. Anyway.......
About to pull the trigger on a relatively nice 79 F350 4x4, regular cab, 400, 4spd. My question though, is how difficult is it to get replacement bedsides or an entire bed? Since the wheelbase is longer, the normal replacement parts and/or donor truck option is a little trickier. There aren't many of them out there.
This truck is far from rotten. The bed floor, etc appears strong, but the bedsides are beginning to bubble above the rear tires and a little bit between the rear tire and rear bumper. It's only a matter of time before the cancer spreads.
Any one ton drivers out there have any advice? Thanks!
I do not know how a 350 is different from a 250 as far as the bed but the problems you describe can easily be fixed by repair panels which will be easy to come by and way less money then a complete bedside.
If the rust is just beginning, why not sand it down and weld up the holes and paint it?
"I do not know how a 350 is different from a 250".....
F-350's have a 140in w.b....but I've seen F-350's that are a SC and the bed is the same as what you'd see on an F-250 or F-150. The 140in w.b trucks also have the spare tire mounted in a compartment on the pass. side....that would be your tell tale sign its an F-350 with the 140in w.b and therefore will not fit on an F-250 or F-150. All else fails get out a measuring tape.
If you have a '79 F350 4x4, then your truck as a standard 8-foot bed that is common to F150s, F250, 2wd, and 4wd trucks. If you can find an 8-foot bed from any of these trucks it will bolt right in your F350. As long as the truck it came from had a 133" wheelbase, the bed will fit.
The only unique 8-foot bed came in the F350 2wd Camper Special trucks. These trucks had a longer 140" wheelbase so their beds are unique to this type of truck only. It's still an 8-foot bed, except that the rear tires are seven inches further back. You can spot these trucks from a distance because they have the spare tire mounted on the right side of the bed, with a big hump on the inside.
The Super Camper Special( longer wheelbase) are all F350's. The Camper Specials would be a F250, standard length bed and wheelbase.
I have both but had never heard of the longer wheelbase other than a SCS. At least with regular cabs.
all 2wd reglar cab f350's were 140 wheelbase . some where scs, some where trailer specials like mine and some were plain ole one tons. the "super" was dropped after 77 and they were refered to as camper specials to avoid confusion with the supercabs,
learned alot myself since aquiring mine. Been scolded/schooled a couple times by NumberDummy, now thats humbling! I think some times he goes back to the t-model, lol

i beg to differ, my 2wd reg cab long bed f350 is 140" . it is not a scs, but a trailer special. i have also seen plenty that were neither but still 140". keep in mind were talking 2wd here
