Well, they told me the head gasket was messed up, but I didn't have the money to get it done. Now it's real bad.
Anyway, it's currently a 302. I'd like to find a 351 to put into it due to the horrible torque numbers out of the 302.
Is it a direct drop, plug and play, or will I need more than just the engine?
Current setup is a 302, 5sp (not ZF), 4X4 with 4.10 gears. The transfer case was recently rebuilt, same with the tranny, new clutch, and it's rolling on 33 inch tires.
It's a Utah truck, so the frame only has surface rust, and the cab is VERY solid with NO visable rust.
he's talking bout the computer... you'll have to swap the computer out for a computer that came from a 351W and manual trans truck...
everything else is a direct swap.. wiring harness and everything is the same..
the reason for the computer swap is the 302 SD computer will cause the 351W to run WAY WAY lean... and will kill it... simple plug in swap to a 351W computer and that takes care of that issue..
You need a complete 5.8EFI from an early truck with a distributor mounted TFI, you also need a 28oz flywheel to fit the ZF, and the exhaust Y will have to be widened unless the truck now has duals on it. The only parts that will transfer from the 5.0 are the accessory brackets, timing cover and water pump.
the car intake is a horrible intake, will definitely need the truck one, but you could use your engine for parts on it. such as fuel rail, upper and lower intake. For the 351 swap it is actually very easy, the whole engine harness swap is the 4 plugs on the driver as its not an E4OD computer. the exhaust will have to be changed cause the 351 is wider. with the 302 from the car depending on what year it is it might have a roller engine which can put out a lot of power. but from a car the cam won't put out much for low end torque and roller cams are very expensive. but with a standard and 410 gears it wouldn't be too bad i suppose, unless you do a lot of 4x4ing then you would want some low end torque. i would go with the 351 personally but money is always an issue as well, atleast for a 20 year old kid like me :P
good luck with the swap.
The Marquis/Vic 5.0 is even more pathetic than the truck motor.. only 150hp.
Great info...thanks.
I sourced a 302 from a 93 F-250...its a roller, right? It only has 80,000 on it and was swapped out for a 460. Im getting it from my boss, so I feel like I can trust it.
