Well it is finally here. Had to take my 2006 6.0 in for a smog check. As reported, it is all visual. Below is a list of what they check, and of course $50.. With the outragious cost of fuel, now this...
The only thing I was worried about was my CCV re-route. It is still a closed system but not stock. He did not seem to even notice.
Inspection:
PCV
Catalytic Converter
EGR Visual
Vacuum Lines to Sensors/Switches
Wiring to Sensors
MIL/Check Engine Light
Carb/Fuel Injection
Other Emission Related Components
Liquid Fuel Leaks
Then: With engine at idle, check for smoke.
Then: Rev engine to 2000 RPM, check for smoke.
All Done, now please pay your $50.
Well at least you did not have to put your CCV reroute back to stock configuration. All the trucks venting straight to atmosphere have got some work to do most likely. I assume from the inspection that your thought was if the truck was venting straight to atmosphere they would have caught that and failed you, correct?
Mine is still closed loop, just though an oil trap. My concern was that it is not stock. Some of the guys that do the inspections are not the sharpest. I was just worried that since it was not stock, would it be bounced?? I did not see if he even noticed. The whole thing took about 2 minutes.
I would imagine that the outrageous fee has something to do with Cali being in such dire straights financially, and that is probably one of the easier and least politically volatile ways of getting more money.
the pcv system on a 6.0 is your ccv.
just wondering did they tap on the cat to make sure its not hollow?
Nope, at least this guy did not. He just looked. Once he rolled the truck up, it was 5 minutes or less. $50 for 5 minutes works out to be $600 an hour. Man am I in the wrong business.

You're lucky! Nevada puts them on a dyno and tests the emissions.
There are only two diesel testing stations in Las Vegas, a city of 2M.
I haven't had the truck for a year yet so I'm not sure. I've seen them drive onto the rollers, attach a large strap to the rear and run in gear. I suppose they would plug into the computer to check for errors?
Here's what the DMV web site says "Light duty diesel vehicles undergo testing on a dynamometer. The technician will also perform an opacity test and a visual inspection of the emissions components."
Oh no, it's $10, but remember that $50 is for a jurisdiction that is having a fiscal crisis, so I'm not suprised that they are really high with their price schedule.
