Radio Display Problem

When I first start my 2005 F350 the sterio display is blank. I have to tap the smoked window or push on the right side of the radio. Usually not very hard. That will usually keep it on until the next time I start. If it goes out while driving usually just tap it - sometimes bang on it... I believe it is the normal Freestar with the 6 cd changer. Any ideas on how I can fix this wo having to find a used radio on the market ($200) or worse have Ford replace it ($500?). Or any place I can purchase a used replacement? I'm ready for an extended service plan but they won't start the policy until the radio display is fixed. Thx!!
