Need New Brakes

Hi all,

I recently got my 1999 250 7.3l extcab lb knowing I would need to replace at a minimum the front brakes, rears seem fine. Just wanted to get some opinions on upgrades for pads and rotors, as well as benefits of one vs. another, etc....

The truck is stock for now and I'll be doing mostly light load hauling in the near future, but I will need the ability to handle several tons on occasion. Any input would be great, thanks

i went with ART rotors and the matching carbon/metallic performance pads on my rig and love them. cryo frozen rotors for added strength and durability and they look awesome.......

you can check them out by clicking on applied rotor technology at the top of the page up in the site sponsor thing. i ordered mine through dieselmanor.com and i think the front set set right at 400 bones for both rotors and pads......

I am running the Powerslot Cryo'ed in conjunction with Hawk LTS pads. The stopping power is greatly improved over stock. You can get them from Clay:

Riffraff Diesel: Power Slot

ALSO if your truck is and early 99 the rotors are different

Nice i had seen some mention of art and cryo'd products in a couple threads and thats not a bad price for the lot. What conditions do you use them under, just curious.....

I just completed mine. 4 stock rotors and EBC yellow pads all the way around. Can't really tell you much yet as I'm still working the break in layer off them. But, I already feel a difference.
I did much reading on this. Seems there are as many opinions as there are people...
But one thing I read after purchasing my stuff is how many on here went with stock rotors and pads because the first set lasted so many miles. Hard to argue that point unless you are building a race truck.

If you have an Early 99 and are going to replace the front rotors they are different then late 99.

I replaced mine a couple years ago with stock parts and I am kicking myself for it. It was only $400 to do all pads and rotors but they warped within a year and are ready to be done again. I could understand this if I did a lot of heavy towing but I use it as a daily driver with a little towing. Spend the money once and do it right. Hawk pads and slotted rotors.

I def have some warp issues as of now, nothing terrible just irritating really...I have heard good things about the Hawk pads, but which rotors would be recommended. EBC advertises great things but I know this is no indication of true performance, Hawk doesnt make rotors do they I dont remember seeing any while looking...

Also, how well do the Powerslots perform, I'm curious because their products vary so widely in price. Is it a situation where they make quality products period or where you should only buy the higher performance sets as their less expensive products are just money makers....

Thanks for all the input...keep it comin

I replaced my stock fronts with ART's at 75k miles. I also put in new front and rear pads from ART as well. They've been awesome and I have no regrets! When I ordered directly from ART, I called and he gave me a discount when I mentioned I saw his AD on here. I did have to wait a week or two while he got enough orders to run a batch through.

For rotors I would say Cyro Powerslots or ART's. Seem to be the favs around here. Probably gonna set you back about $350-400 an axle. Check with Clay, I know he carrys the powerslot rotors (cryoed and noncroyed) and hawk pads.

yea I was assuming it would be in that price range...doing the front for now will help with that but then I might as well service the hubs while I;m in there, i think the driver's side needs replacing...

It looks like Powerslot croys and hawk pads are the best way to go....there are several different types of pads if I'm not mistaken, what is the biggest factor in determining which to choose, towing weight?

Whenever I read a post about a 99 and the poster doesn't mention whether it is a late or early I jump in about earlies vs lates when it can make a difference. It is intended for anyone who reads the thread and not just the original poster.

My brake shimmy problem (warped rotor feel) is well documented over in the Excursion forum. Long story short, the cementite that causes the shimmy/warped feeling can't be resolved by having the rotor turned, it must be replaced.

When I had my brake problems years ago, I did a lot of research and settled on cryo treated Powerslots and Hawk LTS pads. I could have gone with ART rotors too, since they are also cryo treated, but the Powerslots were a bit cheaper at the time.

Since then I've not had any brake problems caused by cementite, none whatsoever. I tow a 10k lb 31' travel-trailer with my Ex, as well as a 10k lb dump trailer.

For the last couple year my F250 has pulled the dump trailer, but I put cryo treated Powerslots on the 250 too, last year.

I've had the rotors on the Ex turned once already, but the next time I'll be replacing them.

Go with Porterfield R4S pads and stock rotors. I promise you will never look back. Stops awesome no dust and rotor friendly.
Un-like Hawks and EBC
