I just started looking into this very thing for my 2000 X with a 5.4L. I contacted two diesel shops in Ohio and the Fordcummins.com in Montana. I would need someone to do the work as I am unable. The general quote they gave me was $5K for parts, $5K for labor and $5K for an engine from them ($15 grand ballpark). Fordcummins.com said I could probably find a wrecked truck with a cummins diesel for less than $5k and have it sent to them. They said the difference between the common rail and other is that common rail would be quieter. Ebay has several cummins motors for sale. All in all, the $15,000 price tag makes it out of my reach for now. If anyone else knows of shop near OH that could do it for cheaper, please chime in.

That's not too bad....I'm planning on doing this same swap but am still just in the planning stage....my friend will proly do the actual swap once his shop is built sometime after next winter....still unsure if I'll do a common rail or not....I am curious if my stock V10 tranny is adequate for the cummins or if I should try and get either a manual or non electric auto instead.....
according to the guys at ford cummins, you actually don't because they send you the parts to basicly plug n play....
That's cool....at the time of that thread there were no conversion harnesses or trans control modules.....the dude had to take both diagrams and pin everything out

So if i use the comminrail and send my harness off to have it reworked do i use a dodge computer with it or the ford computer. I read that on the fordcummins page but couldn't figure out which computer i would use?

The way I read it is that you keep your Ford computer and they help you tie it in to the Dodge engine....as far as transmissions I have found some decent deals on older engine/tranny combos and I was wondering if it would be easier/cheaper to use the tranny

Proly so...I'm still early in the planning stages of this...the build is proly still lil over a year away
Yeah its gonna take me a little while to get things rounded up. I hope to have mine done by the end of this summer though.
So did I but my friend that will be doing the swap is not planning on having his shop done until this fall at the earliest....I don't mind the V10 is running strong w/o leaks and it gives me time to search for deals on parts n plan what else I want done
I've got a 12V with 300k miles on it. Looking for a 7.3 Excursion only because my kids are getting too big for the quad cab. Not uncommon for the 12V to go 1m miles, but the rest of the truck is the limiting factor!
12V is simpler to maintain than the 24V, so cheaper if you are paying for the labor. 24V is quieter I believe. Don't know about the commonrail.
I've done a bit of research on this topic as well, and with the cummins, the common sense line of reasoning that says newer will make more power or get better mileage or be even more reliable is out of the window. Stock, the newer designs will make more power, but from what I've read, the 12v is basically a few free adjustments away from matching that power, and getting better mileage to boot.
The problem is, it's getting harder and harder to find a low mileage wrecked 12v...
Now if only someone made a standalone controller for the torqueshift or the new 6r140, THAT (along with the 12v) I think would be a killer combo.
I found the Diesel World article. It was Sept 2008. The guy put in a 12V (upgraded turbo and other tweaks). It was a detailed article. He used the V10 4R100 with an adaptor plate. He wanted to use the factory Ford cooling system and had to move the drivetrain several inches back in which he installed a body lift for clearance and also added a suspension lift. One sharp rig. He had an issue with the internet sourced adaptor for the tranny and ended up making one. He also used the factory Ford gauges by notching the damper for the tach signal and plugging the factory ford senders for oil and coolant into the Cummins block. All in all, the article was pretty good.
