EGR Cooler Time!

I am the original owner of an 06 F250 Lariate CC FX4. It was purchased in August 05, from Bob Hurley Ford ,so the warrenty is now up. The date on the door is 5 of 05. I turned 85,000 miles yesterday flushing the coolant out. I installed FS2500 bypass oil and transmission filters at the 5,000 mile oil change and switched to the Rotella synthetic oil at that time. The stock oil filter is changed every 5,000 miles and the the oil and bypass filter is changed every 10,000 miles. I replaced both batteries in December as they were starting to get weak. The maintanence is done on time for the fuel and transmission and with Ford filters. It has been a good truck. I had upwards of 20mpg(best20.5) when it was new, not using the lie o meter, and before the dealer reflashed it, it averages about 14-16 now. In the first part of January I installed the Edge CTS and the first thing I discovered was the thermostat was not up to par, fully warm it would get to 180, and of course the EOTs are high. I got the thermostat(pn 3C3Z 8575-aa), VC9, the SimpleGreen Pro HD, and Zerox 05 coolant but could not find the Restore or Restore Plus here locally. I flushed the system yesterday and other than that slightly sandy stuff in the hoses I really didn't get anything out. Nothing. I had replaced the original coolant in September with the Ford Gold, no flush, just drained and replaced. My coolant temps before the thermostat were about 15 degrees apart 180-182 ECT to 197-199 EOTs. Afterward 192 ECT to an average of 199 and high of 204 on the oil temps. it is in the low 30s here. I have the coolant puff at cold start and the bottom of the EGR passage is very gummy and it was cleaned 5,000 miles ago. I am planning on a Bulletproof EGR and a stock oil cooler change out. I would like to also update some other items and I am looking for any advice, tools and part numbers that I might want to include. This will be done out in the driveway and yes there is snow on the ground now and it is cold here but it could be 70 next week, you just never know. Here's my list and some questions:

Bulletproof EGR Cooler
Dieselsite bypass coolant filter
Dieselsite CAC hoses
Magenefine M10CB filter(NAPA has it coming for me) for the PS
Racor filter assembly for rerouting the CCV
M12-1.5 o-ring male fitting to 1/8 NPT female fuel pressure adapter

Fuel Pump Regulator Kit (3C3Z-9T517-AG)actually have it already
Banjo bolts (2@ Banjo bolt W302472)
and washers( 4@washerW303659)
HCFM drain valve(6E7Z-9C082-A)
EGR cooler updated blue hose(4C4Z-8592-AA)
and orings (3C3Z-9N693-EA & 3C3Z-9N693-FA)Do I need them with the Bulletproof EGR?
Oil Cooler kit(3C3Z-6A642-CA)does this have the screen(3C3Z-6C683-AB) in it?
HPOP Dummy Plugs and Standpipes update (6E7Z-9A332-B)
HPOP Connector Bracket Kit(4C3Z-9B246-A)does this include STC(4C3Z-9B246-E)?
D rings for rails(4@W301390 and 4@W301386)
Turbo Clean Kit(4C4Z-9V424-AA)
Turbo Drain update (6C3Z-9T515-A)
Turbo Supply update (3C3Z-9T516-A)
Intake Gasket Kit(3C3Z-9433-BE) Includes Turbo Mounting hardware (3C3Z-9T514-AD) Are the gaskets reuseable?
I plan on checking the glow plugs while I am in there, What about the injectors?

Sorry for the long post, I plan on some miles this summer. I have started downloading the PDFs and have started looking for the service procedures and gathering the torque specs and such. Sent the torque wrenches off for calibration to get ready. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated....Raven

I would not do this in the driveway, to many parts to deal with and keep together. when you pull this think apart you will have crap everywhere. I just did mine a lot of parts, everything needs to be labeled and marked , take pics ,and take your time. good luck

To delete the egr on an 05 and up requires a tuner to turn off the CEL. Also recent events show that a new cooler is better than no egr at all.

I had considered the EGR delete but decided against it, the cel light was one of those considerations. I also considered something like the Bulletproof remote oil cooler kit, but I didn't want that expense and didn't want anymore external oil lines.
I would love it if someone made a beefed up stock type replacement oil cooler. The truck is to big to get into the garage, so it will sit infront and I just spread the parts out as I take them off and clean them.

One question for you - why are you replacing the coolers? Unless I read your first post wrong (completely possible), it looks like your temps are all in line.

Yes they do seem in line. But there is no doubt that I am experiencing coolant in the EGR passages. It is very slight now but that coupled with strange and inconsistant temp ranges raises some red flags. The truck has been good to me for over 5 years, being proactive now should help it make another 10

Hey Raven,it's your truck and do what you want but I agree with this statement. IMO you need to MAKE SURE that what you are seeing in your intake is in fact coolant. Your temps. are right where they are supposed to be. The Ford TSB on the temps. states that the ECT needs to be 190 deg. or higher in order for the test to be accurate, therefore your temp. spreads with the old thermostat are to be ignored and the spreads you are getting now since thermo. replacement sound good. It would be pretty rare for you to have an EGR cooler go out without the oil cooler blockage. That being said,I think if it is in fact coolant that you are seeing in your intake you prob. need to replace ONLY the EGR cooler. Also,I have an '06 as well and I also had the new flash installed back in the summer and since the new flash I get a small white "puff" at cold start and when I posted about it on here I was told (by Cheezit) that the white "puff" was perfectly normal. You also stated that you had been doing quite a bit of idling lately so that could play a part in your "gummy" intake as well as the old thermo. not getting you up to full operating temp.Like I said,it's your truck so do as you wish, but I think there's a good possibility that there's NOTHING,or maybe just an EGR cooler at the most, wrong with your truck.Just don't wanna see a brother mess up,let us know how it turns out and good luck!!

Also, back to the "small white puff",a couple months ago I was setting the parameters for my Insight for the "maint. manager" software and I had the key on/engine off for alot longer than usual while setting this stuff and when I started the truck I got a larger "puff" than normal which tells me that this puff is definitely related to the new flash and is def. fuel and not coolant. My advice would be to have someone else start the truck for you and smell your puff,if it smells sweet it's coolant,if it smells like diesel it's diesel. Not trying to bug you, just trying to help,GOOD LUCK!!

I was under the impression that it was a proactive thing. If he is installing the bulletproof EGR cooler, it is not a bad idea to throw in a new oil cooler if you have the bucks - just do the VC9 coolant flush before installing the new cooler.

I agree though - the slight exhaust puff at start-up is likely to be normal. Also, a gummy intake under the EGR valve is probably fuel and/or combustion related. Coolant is pretty easy to identify.

I have a steep driveway and have been parking down hill in an attempt to actually find coolant in the manifold. I also have done the high idle mod to help with any extensive idling. I have an extra EGR valve here that gets swapped out every few days and cleaned up. I have been cleaning up the passages as well as you can and I believe what I have is pooling of the coolant, and not wetting from the fuel. I have also tested the coolant for exhaust and it came back negative, twice. I picked up the Napa kit for testing, I should have done that a long time ago as I have 6 turbo mustangs here that can eat a head gasket pretty quick if you get into the detonation. I really do not want to get into this if I don't have too. I thought I would try parking downhill and pressurizing the system just for grins this weekend. Is there a test to measure the quantity of coolant being returned to the degass bottle?
