Ive seen tons of videos of guys taking their truck into some deep river crossing or an unexpectedly deep mud hole and the entire engine is covered. This seems like a good time to have a snorkel. But the only trucks I ever see them on are jeeps and toyotas and others of that type. Anyone using one on their truck or have an idea how to fabricate one that would look decent and be functional?
I can think of a way to do that.....there's a company called Volant that makes Ford blue conical filters (which is how I became aware of them). They also make an intake box that is fender mounted. That would be the first piece of the puzzle, as you'd obviously need a filterbox to keep the filter dry, but still route air in the correct direction.
The next component would be a carb hat that can seal the carburetor from the elements. I know of a company called Superior Airflow, that makes a carb hat called the Extreme Velocity carb hat. You can get it in a polished aluminum finish which would look good.
Now, you'd have to fabricate the tubing not only for the snorkel, but also from the filter box to the carb hat. Oddly enough, I know of another company called Vibrant Performance that produces all of the intake tubes and silicone connectors necessary to make an intake tube that could serve as a snorkel. The tubes are polished aluminum, and with the universal parts they offer (straight, 90 elbow, 45 elbow, etc), you can pretty much route it any way you want.
I was considering this route for Buford so as to make the intake look more like a forced induction sort of proposition, but decided against it as I didn't want the engine compartment to look too busy.
The only thing I haven't figured out is the typical plastic intake tip at the top of the snorkel, but I'm sure that could be figured out. Now, as to how you attach all of that to the body of the truck, that's on you. At least I've given you a direction to get yourself into trouble with.
Good information. I appreciate it. I'm probably going to fabricate something this summer using pvc pipe but i wanna make it look good. havent decided on routing the tupes yet either. may come straight up thru the hood and make that piece removable until needed.
