checking for codes

Ive got a 94.5 powerstroke turbo ,, ive had couple flutters were the check engine will come on and go back out. Borrowed a scanner off a buddy,, its a Elite Auto Scanner Pro ,, do you know if this will work.. What i did was plug it in out by the fender first ,,, not power, runs the power off the truck, So i plugged in the one by the shifter it does turn the scan tool on,, so i let it run through but keeps saying error or something so is this a OBD 2 ??? any help this evening would be helpful thanks so much

Our trucks were not OBD2 till 96ish.

You can still scan codes, but you gotta have an OBD1 scanner.
or be able to change the settings for obd1.

talyn, that's only for 95 and up. If it's a real 94.5 with the factory computer like mine then you need a cheap EEC-4 code flasher. It's the only thing that works right on the connector under the hood. 95 model had codes enabled on some of them through the DLC under the dash but nothing else. 96 was all of it on the DLC. codes, datastream and all.

On the 94.5 the codes are different from all other models too. I have a slide chart here from Ford for it somewhere so once you get some post them and we'll see what we got.

Oh and just so you know you can go to oreilleys and order a 96 F350 powerstroke Vin F PCM for a 5 speed. it MUST be for a 5 speed. It's a direct replacement. Then your connector under the dash will turn on and you'll be able to actually look at a datastream. It sure beats getting the breakout box out every time.

Oh, your not talking about the OBDdifferences then.
Cause PSD OBD2 changeover was in 96.
But the scanner differences were in 95?

I have no issues with my scangauge on my 94.5. But who knows.

94.5 was kinda messed up, cause it was the first time for the powerstroke, not everything was ironed out yet.

The code flashers for eec4 used a 9 volt battery in them. I know one of the wires is powered in there though. YOu can also jump two of the wires on the connector but I forget which. Look up eec-iv pulling codes. THis computer has nothing to do with obd anything.

Oh gotcha.

You can pull codes off the OBD port on the 94.5's with the Aeroforce scanner.

I loose some functionality when I pull my chip though. Kinda neat how the tuner chips give you OBD2 support.

not on the early computer you can't. You can't do it with the star scanner, otc or the one you have. Yours has been reflashed. Or replaced to 95 I would bet. I was working at a ford dealer in 95 and every powerstroke we got in we would just reflash so we could use our scanner. Most of the time I would do it and not even tell anyone or charge the customer. I was getting paid to diagnose it the old way anyway with the breakout box so if it was under warranty then why not speed things up a bit? This was very common. Mechanics hate wasting time. time is money. 94.5 models spent a lot of time in the shop too. rough running, so the owners thought, and winter smoking really freaked them out. So did the crappy brake boosters we got and the lack of heat in the winter. These are the big things I can remember doing on them in Pennsylvania. Oh and rebuilding about 30 or 40 of the engines after a flood. That was fun.

No idea.
I know mine is a junkyard PCM from a 94.
It's written on the PCM. haha.

Mines really smokey on winter startups. =( I think i got a glow plug acting up . Mighta burnt UVCH again. I sure hope not.

I know with the chip in, i have no issues. I'd really like to flash it to OBD2 though.
It was probably flashed before it went into the junkyard if what your saying is true, cause the guy i got it from... no way he'd do that. haha.
