OK, one more question. I have the 400 c.i. engine with an Edelbrock 1406 carb and Edelbrock 400 performer intake. The specs on the stock fuel pump say the min. pressure is 6.5 p.s.i. and the maximum is 8.0 p.s.i. My Edelbrock book says NOT to exceed 6.5 p.s.i. So I was curious, do the people here that are running this setup use regulators to regulate the pressure or is the stock pump pressure just fine? I just cant seem to get this to run right and I was suspecting the fuel pressure is off. I noticed there is barely any fuel in the filter (not that it probably matters). I am putting in a different pump that I had here from another 400 in case my pump isnt putting out the right pressure (don't have a gauge). Any advice? This carb idles very nicely but as soon as you try to gun it, it cuts out real bad. If you baby the throttle it works fine. Thanks.
Never ran a ragulator. Stock pump and edel carb ran fine together. I had the performer 400 intake and a 600cfm carb stock pump and long tube headers never had a problem. Try a new pump and let us know.
I just put my other pump on it and I think I am going to road test it and see what it does. It sounds about the same as before. I was watching the fuel going through the filter and it seems to be coming in at the expected rate (I guess). This is the 600 cfm carb as well. It sounds awesome sitting at idle and when you gun on it sitting it does fine, its just when you put it under load going down the road.
I've never run an eddy fuel pump...but I've run Holley's with the same specs and never had an issue. Sounds to me more like someone screwed up your carb or didn't know how to tune it. Check your acc. pump and float levels. Come to think of it, your secondaries might be out of whack as well.
I have no idea how old the coil or ignition box is. The carb doesnt have much on it as far as mileage goes (supposedly). I also tried adjusting the accelerator pump linkage to the bottom hole. It seems to run a little better. I dont feel it trying to lunge as much as before. It still wants to cut out though if you give it more than about 1/2 throttle.
^^^You may not need to rebuild the carb...sounds to me like it needs some adjusting though. And what's the PN on the Eddy...to determine difficulty of rebuild. In all actuality, I find Eddy's to be really user friendly for newbie wrenchers...but after some experience, you won't care what kinda carb it is.
This is a 1406 4 bbl. I thought the only things to adjust were idle mixture and the rich/lean on the choke housing? It idles perfect, so does that mean that more than likely the idle mixtures are fine? I haven't touched the rich/lean on the choke housing...maybe I should? If I were to check for vacuum leaks, what is the best way to do it? I have heard of people spraying carb cleaner where they suspect a leak may or may not be...or is a gauge the better option? Where is the best place to hook up the gauge? Sorry if I sound ignorant here just getting frustrated!!
OK...I did a vacuum test and it all checked out just fine. It hold at a very steady 18. It also reads as it is supposed to when you gun the throttle. I am going to buy a carb kit tomorrow and rebuild this carb. What is the best thing to soak these carb parts in? Laquer thinner, gas, or?
