How many miles do you have on your truck. Mine had less than 400 when it started. The kit was put on at about 300 miles. I hope ford has not screwed up with this new system. If you are talking about the level kit coming off this will not cure the problem. I had mine removed by the dealer and I drove it and it does the same thing. I found it very easy to duplicate by driving at about 10-20 mph and run over the little reflectors in the road with the left wheel. I am going to replace the EPAS and if that does not cure it then ford will have to figure it out from there and I will work to get refunded. It is not over.
Yes, i was hoping removing it would put it back to normal! I guess not then....WOW what a deal! My first new Ford since 2004 Heritage! This truck has 1700 miles......my wifes ride hell she didn't tell me until i drove it the other day and figured out something was wrong after the lift was installed! I love the truck and it runs awesome! Please let me know what you figure out with Ford!
I wish Ford would've just left well enough alone and stuck with a traditional steering system. Is the truck market that cut throat these days that Ford needs to come up with all these hi tech components to give thier trucks the edge over the others. What ever happened to selling the most trucks because they were the toughest truck on the road, instead of trying to be the most advanced and ending up with alot of complicated systems that don't always work in the real world.
Another part of the problem is that everyone wants their truck to ride/handle like a car, this can't be accomplished without having a bunch of high tech components that end up compromising durability because of the complexity of the parts. Ford needs to go back to building trucks like they did back when a truck was viewed as a tool, simple and reliable, and the only luxury options you had to choose from was ac,pw,pl, and an auto trans.
hi,just read through this thread,i purchased a 2011 f150 4x4 supercab with a 5.0.i only have 570 km on the truck as of today and bought it on thursday, instralled a 2 inch readylift leveling kit on friday morning.went out of town and relized it had the same exact clunk in the left side through the steering.very irritating because i traveled on 200 kilometers of gravel roads.
as of right now i can tell that the "clunk" in the steering isnt due to the leveling kit because at work we also have a bran new 2011 f150 supercrew with the new 5.0 and i recall driving the company truck on some washboards and hearing this same clunk.the company truck also has under 700 kilomters as well
really irritates me because this is my first bran new vehicle and had it for a day and noticed the clunk
Whats bad on mine is im pretty sure not 100% sure......it didn't do this until the lift was put on! Its my wife's ride so i've only drove it about 100 miles so far but I've owned Fords all my life. This is real annoying on our driveway that is gravel for a 1/4 of a mile! Don't feel it on the highway. Going to talk to my service guy next week! I will keep u guys posted! Other than that I love that Race Red CC Fx4!
The reason ford did this was for HP along with the elec. fans it saves load on the engine, just another reason not to buy for at least a year when all this new technology is first offered and I personally don't think EPAS in a truck is worth a crap if it is used as a truck???
Personally, I like the EPAS, plus the fact that the hydraulic power steering setup is replaced with something that seems to be simpler. (I hope it turns out to be robust, but this thread raises some concerns about that...)
My truck has stock suspension, and I'm on gravel roads a lot, and I've not heard/felt the clunk that seems to be caused when modding the stock suspension.
Got to test the beast today on icy roads here in Dallas. Handled great accept for the steering wheel clunk that really showed up on the rough ice. I still think the issue has to do with the intermediate shaft. How is everyone else doing with the steering/left suspension clunk.
Took the 2011 in today for the steering clunk, after close inspection they stated the rack was out! They disconnected the steering shaft, and then moved the shaft around on the rack anf they could hear it clunking around! So, they ordered me a new one the mechanics didn't say anything about the level kit on the front. I'm good friends with most of them in the Tahlequah, OK Ford dealership. I have to take it back next week for the install of the new rack, I will keep you guys posted! The snow on the roads made the clunking sound bad!
Are they sure it is the rack. I am waiting for my new rack that they say I have to pay for . If the new rack does the same thing then I will be pissed and won't pay the bill, and they will have to find the real source. Can't waite to here your outcome.
Why would they make you pay for the rack? Its under warranty? Are they doing it because you altered the suspension with the level kit? I will keep you guys posted as we progress through the procedure of this service!
Posting to be notified of updates on this topic. I've a 2011 FX4 5.0L on order and am interested in where this goes / ends up, as I was also planning on adding a 1.5 - 2" front lift.
One of the reasons for EPAS is fuel economy - eliminating the parasitic drag of a conventional ps system. And as they keep tightening the screws on corporate fuel economy...... mfgs need to keep looking for ways to off-set it especially on trucks.
The reason they say I have to pay for it is during the installation of the kit the directions state to hit the ball joint with a hammer to brake it free. Ford has issued a service document dated 1/07/2011 number 21643 that during service of the steering system it is to be depowered prior to service and there is to be no hammer blow or impact wrench use on it. If this proceedure is not followed there could some arching. It also states that there would be a code set u3000:49 and the EPAS would have to be replaced. This is where I object. There is no code and mine is more mechanical in nature not electrical. We'll see.
6fastback7, have you taken your truck in to have the new rack put on. The dealer called and said my part is in but I want to see if it fixes yours first.
Hey guys, what is EPAS? My new 2010 F150 scab 4x4 with standard bed has a clunk sound during light to moderate acceleration around 35-40 mph on a slight road incline. The truck only has 515 miles on it. I have not installed a leveling kit and have not changed tire/rim size. the noise sounds like drive train and is certainly puzzling.
