There are a lot of variables to concider in that though. I'm building my 460 with top notch parts and then keeping a mild cam and carb to keep the air flow and fuel to a min to still getting good mpg. I'm shooting for 16-17mpg. A stock well tuned 460 will do 13-14mpg acording to the guys in the 460 forum.
That's sad, a 300 gets so bad. I even try to get good mpg, and may get 12mpg on a good day. My setup isnt ideal, and I primarily use it in town under 40mph.
A 40 yr. old, 4,000 lb. cinder block shaped vehicle will never get good gas mileage, especially if it's got a 460 under the hood. I don't ever plan to calculate my mileage since I did the 460 swap, it might put me into shock
It has OK smiles per gallon. The big reason for yanking it out in a few months is to make the smiles bigger. The engine that's in my avatar is what's going in there....somehow. Being diesel, I'm hoping for 17mpg in town, and maybe 20 on the hiway...as long as I dont romp on it too much.
I think with the torque you will be getting from that thing will alowe for some seriously high ratio gears to add to your mpgs. I kinda want to do a swap like that and go all bio just because I can but i'm afraid of the expence of a motor like that.
The highest gears I could find for a Sterling is 3.08, which shouldnt be too bad, and the Allison isnt an overdrive. No possible way a 9" would hold up, so I'm getting a Sterling 10.25 to match the big F250 rotors I got for the front. That's a bit off topic. Back to 460s shall we?
When doing a 460 swap as jedi out it smiles per gallon from what I gathered from different people with the 460 swaps they get 8 to 13 mpg average but you have to consider the build how well its tuned gears and how much of a lead foot you have but that seems to be the basic average for the 460's

My 31 spline 9" holds up well to my 500+ hp and 500+ ft. lbs. of torque.
I get smiles per gallon reading some claims made on this site. Thing is when swapping around trannys, tires, rears, speedo gears don't get corrected, or canucks buying a different measure of gas and using US calculations to figure it.
These big azz bricks don't cut the wind they plow it.
Mine is going for 400hp, and 900lb tq, and at a super low 1800 rpm. That combo breaks stuff really fast.
My experience is that you'll run into traction problems long before anything breaks. I can roast my tires if I mash the gas at 45 mph. I get third gear chirps and a little bark sideways going into third at 85 mph.
