The biggest deal with not disassembling, besides the seals, is the oil. If not hot tanked/cleaned/prepped "righteously" before coating and heating the oil and/or it's fumes WILL weep out onto the surface, destroying any possibility of good/consistent adhesion!

when i get the money to rebuild my axles with lockers i will completly strip them down and have them cleaned and powder coated for now i' think i'm going to just paint them anyone have some good suggestions on a durable paint to use on them
I had used por15 on mind and ran out of paint so some places got missed and forgotten. Then was replacing water pump & thermostat some and some coolant had leaked down on the axle on the unpainted por15 and later when cleaning up the mess where coolant leaked on to the pro15 started it to peel off in a few places I didn't get painted with eng paint. So I ended up just using high temp black engine paint after that. It drys fast and stands up pretty good to most any thing. Ez to hose off too...Trouble with Powder coating is once it gets chipped and starts to rust. The rust blisters the powder coating as the rust keeps going. Where as this won't happen when using pro15 as a base coat. Plus other good products on the market to..

Did you use the marine clean and primer from the POR15 line first before you put the black topcoat of POR15 on top? So the only reason it started to peel is because the coolant got under the paint where you didn't coat it? My only problem with using the POR15 is I hear to much about it peeling off if you use it on non rusted surfaces but on rusty places its great
Ah por15 needs a good preb job or acid washed, or sand blasting. Having a
4x4 seems a never ending to small rocks getting in your tires and coming out that kind of chips the paint on the front axle tubes, so this also adds to the possibly why the por15 started peeling after coolant getting it. I needed to just use up the por15 cause it was the left over and didn't want to just shxt can it..

So you think if it was completely sealed with POR15 and no chips it wouldn't of started to peel when coolant hit it? What's everyone's opinions on using eastwoods chassis black? Seems durable and easier to apply I think then the multi steps needed for POR15
Well por15 recommends apply 2 coats and a coat or regular paint covering it..
But. I have no idea if it wouldn't of started to peel when coolant got on for any length of time if left pro15 was unpainted over..
