Question Rear End Swap?

I just got a 91 f150 short bed manual 2wd lariat.Wanted to know if i could swap rear end out with a 1978 f150 4x4 nobular rear end with 410 gears and limited slip?I'm going to be running 32/11.5/15 BFG mud tires with a 3'' body lift on my truck. If rear end swap can be done is this a good gear for that combo? Also are rear ends same size and if so could i just put 410 gears and limited slip differential in my trucks rear end?thanks for any help you can give don't know much about rear ends harry

Rear End Swap?

Your 91 Truck should have an 8.8 rear end vs. the 9 inch that should be in the 78. So to clear this up, the gears will not swap between these two axles. But the 9" would swap despite the fact that you may have to modify the spring perches on the axle because the pre 80's trucks had a narrower frame. This could be accomplished by a good welder. If you made this swap successful then you would just have to worry about getting a driveshaft that would work with the 9's yoke. Otherwise the bolt pettern for the wheels will be the same and with a 9 inch you don't have to worry about the axle tubes spinning in the differential casting.

Rear End Swap?

73-79 and 80-later 1/2 ton axles have the same width/spring perches. 9" axles don't have the abs sensor and driveshaft mods might be required.
