Yes. The T170F Side Mounted OD tranny was cast iron tranny based on the old toploader. The T170FS SROD and the T170FT TOD were both similar boxes but were aluminum. Not all SMODs are HD boxes though. If you're not fixed on the iron case, you might want to look for a TOD box, IIRC they were all truck-strength boxes

Overdrive on these trannies is nothing special . It's not an external add-on. It's simply that 4th gear is an indirect drive with a ratio of less than 1:1.
