i'm sure batteries are not helping you any, but i don't think that's your only issue. i don't always trust the store testers either...i had a starter test good more than once at different stores, got fed up, replaced it anyway cause my truck still randomly wouldn't start...and that had been my problem all along, apparently, because she hasn't acted up since
my boyfriend is reading over my shoulder and says fuel delivery issue of some kind...check any hoses, connections, and wiring to fuel pump for anything broken, corroded, or leaking- espcially rubber that could deteriorate on the inside (and yes, he does know his stuff, he's lead tech at Merchant's ) that's likely to be cheaper than a fuel pump too, so can't hurt to look! good luck
Thanks for the reply. That was the first thing that went through my mind, kuz if their scanners aren't good then their alt test might be off. Most likely getting new batteries tomorrow and I'll check the hoses and wires then. Also does my truck (1997 F350 psd) have an electric pump or mechanical and where is it located
if their scanners aren't good then their alt test might be off.
Different issue. Our PCM communications are unique, and thus require non-standard readers/scanners. The alternators are higher output than other trucks, but otherwise are wired the same, so the store test is just as reliable (or unreliable) as with any other vehicle.
ok boys and girls of fte im finally making headway with my truck... ive had both the starter and alternator tested= they tested good. my positive battery cable eyelet that bolts on to the starter was super loose and damaged, so i replaced it, got new duralast gold batteries (800 cold cranking) and my truck wasnt plugged in for a week and a half (i live in michigan and its crazy cold out)and i went to start it... started right up no problem, no long cranking at all but i noticed the exhaust smoke and it came out kinda bluish at first then real dark gray smoke (almost black) and my truck has never put out dark gray before only white when its cold out... so i was wondering if this backs up the theory of a bad fuel pump or something electrical. while it was runnig ( all of 2 mins ) started to surge so i shut her down.
Have you checked your fuel? Draw some out of the tank into a clear glass recepticle and check it for color/sediment/contaminants/water. Get the siphon hose as far down into the tank as possible so you are drawing from where your pick up tube does. Also, have you checked your fuel pressure? If you had a bunch of gunk on your filter, it's gotta come from somewhere.
Well i would like to let all of you know... i witnessed a miracle, my truck runs now. I went to go out to tear the fpr apart and clean it and such, but the thought of trying to start my truck before i did this went thru my mind. So naturally I did...believe it or not she started up perfect (or as perfect as a 13 year old truck does) just white smoke coming from teh exhaust from not being plugged in for 2ish days. it sounded fine i think but i noticed it felt like it was going to cut out once but it didnt came right back to life. I'm going to take this as a sign taht something still might be wrong so I think I will get it scanned tomorrow seeing as I have a snowday from that 16" winter blast in michigan. Im first gunna try autozone and then work my way to the dealer I think.
