Cool possible alternator problems

I have a grinding noise that occurs intermittently and it does not happen everyday. When the noise occurs the amp meter goes to the high side and goes back to normal when the noise stops. Also the light dim during this noise. The Ford dealership thought it was the 4 x 4 actuators trying to go into four wheel drive. They replaced both actuators and the noise still occurs. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? One mechanic said it could be the beginning of the alternator going bad.
