1992 ford E350 ambulance.
Glow plug relay clicking repeatedly
Wait to start light flicks on (.5 sec) then stays off
I replaced the glow plug relay, no joy
I have started replacing the glow plugs.
Am having trouble accessing them. Are there any tips or tricks to getting at these evil things?
So far, my multi meter found two of them to be fine (I replaced anyway) and two of them were 'open'... Ie: infinite ohms, no connection.
So, if anyone has any advice for getting to the rest of th plugs, I would love to hear it! Dang! Starts me thinking I should have got the f350 ambulance instead... But I fell in love with the idea of walk thru access to the back... Didn't realize that accessing the engine would be such a major pain!
One trick I use on my 7.3L powerstrokes is to loosen the glow plus witha socket and then use a 3 inch piece of washer fluid hose or small vacuum hose to spin them the rest of the way out. That way your socket won't get stuck when you back them off all the way.
It works on install as well. Hope that helps. Its bout all I got.
I had an 88 with the same engine. Be patient and work at it. 1/4 drive extensions with U-joints will help with the spinning them in and out. Before long you will be really good at it because you will need to do this a couple times a year. Preheat should last 20 seconds before it starts clicking. As the glow plugs burn out the time gets shorter and shorter. This makes it that much harder to start leading to battery strain and eventual starter failure. You will get used to spending a couple thousand a year to keep this engine running from here on out. Lucky for me mine finally blew up (water ingested from river crossing) and I swapped a 460 in. The carburated 460 got 4 more mpg and had 4 times the power.
