I tore my heater apart this weekend and found one of the panels that sits behind the heater core to be very rusted out. Has anyone found a good aftermarket source for replacement pieces?
On another note, how many of you have gone a different route and used a setup from another vehicle? If so, make and model?
Yep, thats one side. From what I took apart, there were 4 rubber (used to be anyway) insulators that I think insulated the core from the housing. Maybe it was to keep the outer case from getting too hot to the touch. Like I said, it doesn't bolt to anything, it just rests in there and I was thinking of just leaving it out.
Have 8 of them media blasted , epoxy primed and ready for instal on all the Magic Air heaters under restoration . Sure wish I had an extra to help you out .
Maybe time to hone your restoration skills . Media blast it and see what you have .If any rusted out /holes appear these can be repaired by using some 3/4 oz. fiberglass mat with resin . Apply directly to the clean metal . May have to make little dammed up areas to hold resin while it cures .See thread titled = '48 -'50 blower motor case= to see what can be repaired .Good luck . My truck came with no heater, and I couldn't find one I could afford. Instead, I have an earlier chrome Firestone heater. No defrost, but 5 vertical doors, and no leaky core. Scored it for next to nothing from a good friend. I have no idea when it was from or what it went to.
I'm using early datsun mini truck heater......It's a small compact unit easy to hang and mostly plastic....My truck 1951 f-1 And I'm The"EARL" like in Duke Of the Darkside

I media blasted the pieces yesterday and have the parts that need repairing in fiberglass right now. Will be using the Krylon silver/gray hammertone finish on the outer pieces and flat black on defroster vents and the under fender air tube pieces.
I am just gonna throw this out there....if anyone has an extra heater laying around...perhaps one they would not mind parting ways with...I would like a stock heater box so I could actually have defrost. Condition of the fan motor does not matter cause I will be installing a 12V fan.
