i have a build 390 an it has a 4bbl with eletric choke an is wired up but i still have a hard time gettin it to start in really cold wheather like 10 or so. what can i do so it will start in wheather like this ?
Think about the motor starting as a series of things that have to be just right for it to start. For instance is the carb staying full of fuel or is it leaking down so you have to crank it enough for the pump to fill it back up before it starts? Have you verified that the choke is actually closing when it's cold? Any vacuum leaks? Is the timing correct? If you're still running points are they in good shape? Plugs/wires in good shape? If you still have points is the starting wire that goes to the points still functioning? If it has an electronic ignition has the resistor wire been removed?
A series of little details, but if one of them is wrong it will cause the problems you have.
Try getting in the truck, hit the starter for 3-5 seconds, give the pedel 2 full pumps to the floor, hit the starter again.
I drove my truck yesterday, I can probably pump the gas and it will start. When parked several days, I need to do something like I described above for easier starting.
Try some different combos, you'll get it figured out.
My truck bogs down when I start after few accelerator pumps. It will start only if I press down on the accelerator slightly and hit the starter runnin the engine at 1000 rpms for few seconds, turn the engine off, engage the electrical choke and restart without depressing on the accelerator again. This seemed to work fine, but not really a standard procedure.
