well guys today while playing in the snow here i noticed that my back two wheels was spinning. not weird at all right expect that i have a open rear or so the tag on the rear says. it was changed about two years ago by the former owner. the tag says 355 no L in between the 3 and 5 could he have just used the wrong face plate when putting it together or does this sometimes happen even with a open rear end. oh this isn't the only time it has happen either both time it was in the snow and over say about 3500 rpms each time. so i was just wondering if this has happen before or just a case of having the wrong tag thanks for all the help with this.
i got a set of 31 10 50's on it but i thought that a open rear would never spin both or is it just something that happens when you get so much tourqe. before this happen i was thinking of getting a locker since it was open but if it's not i am just going to replace the friction plates in the limited slip and add one on both sides.
As for why a open spins both so times go figure lol. I replaced the plates in my LS and worked amazingly. I put em back just how they were stock and it worked.
It wasnt till about a week after i had it all put back together that you could put it together differently and it work even better. lol.
ya i have read on here that you can change the plates around not metal to metal and they will work even better which is what i am going to do if i have lsd but i doubt i do and will have to get a locker. when the weather breaks i am planning on putting a bed on and getting a paint job on the truck so i will just put the locker or new plates in at that time
Before i spent the money on a locker i would check local junkyards. You would be amazed at how easy it would be to find a limited slip unit. then just pay for the plates, and you will still be money ahead.
i can get a rear for 125 and mine on trade and the plates cost 60 to 70 and the locker i was looking at was the aussie but that is just what i found close to the price i was going to pay for the rebuild of the rear i would buy but problay will go with another rear in the long run and save 50 bucks i am cheap lol
If $$ wasn't an issue, look at a tru-lock Diff. It's a true posi, not a L.S. which is commonly referred to as trac-lock. The trac-lock is the lesser of the three types of traction rear ends. The most aggressive traction rear end is termed a ' Detroit locker '. That's primarily used on drag strips, cause it doesn't allow for the compensation when turning corners. I'm talking production line rear ends, not custom made.
if my rear is open i wouldn't mind putting in a type of locker but i don't want to lock both wheels all the time that isn't something i want to do. i drive to much on road for that. i looked at the lock right and they start at 350 and the second one is 469 that is withing buget if i saved for a while but to be honest i don't do enough off roading to have such a set up. i have owned this truck for three years and only had it off road about 5 times when i play it's in a field mostly when the snow is on and i ahve only done that a few times this year.
I had an open diff that would spin both. I had done too many one-leg burnouts and galled the spider gears pretty bad. Eventually it grenaded and I upgraded it to an L/S. For my 86 I found a 3L55 rear in the yard for $60. Got a plate kit for ~$40. It ended up needing spiders so that was another $70-80 but the bearings looked great. Works beautifully... All for less then $200.
ya i am going to go over everything before when i put a rear or locker in my truck which ever i do but i dont' really burn the wheels at all never have it was a used rear and put in this truck by another owner so it's just problay wore really good. by the way i put the 351 efi in my short bed also so it's got a little more than a 300 or 302 for that matter.
You guys are gettin me anxious, just put a 3L55 in mine, rebuilt a rear leaf spring and now have to put the 5 spd, transfer case and misc back together - to see what it'll do .... looking forward to being able to push in the clutch pedal and turning that key ....
A tru-lock Diff.will allow for turning. A Detroit Locker will not. It's primarily used for drag strips, and off road exclusively. Tru-lock is better than a Trac-lock. Trac-lock is a L.S. Using those pins to lock the spiders is not a good idea for street use.

Reason: Add more info.
what about the aussie locker ? it's only 269.99 i have read some stuff on it. it seems to hold up well from what i have read and it's like the true lock. it's just when i need the back two tires i want them both to go not one half the way and the other just some know what i mean
Keep your eye on eBay. I picked up a brand new lsd for my 10.25" rear for $200 and then re-sold my open diff on eBay for $60. Next I plan to put an ARB air locker in the front; they're spendy but the ultimate for off-road and highway driving.
