I have to replace the steering box on my '79. Is this hard to do? I'm not rebuilding it just replacing it. I'm wondering if i should just have a mechanic do it or if it's really easy...
It's not a bad job. Sometimes the mounting bolts can be rusty and hard to get loose. Also, the pitman arm can be tough also. You'll need a pickle fork to separate the drag link from the pitman arm and a pitman arm puller to get that off. If you have a good impact, that makes the job easier. The power steering lines usually aren't bad getting loose. If they look rusty also, make sure you have a good line wrench so you don't strip out the lines.
Relatively easy. IMO, the toughest part is removing the pitman arm to swap onto your new steering gear. DIY and pay yourself with going through the experience. If you need to buy tools, then you'll always have the tool.
Very easy project like the others said. I took mine out to replace the seal in the input shaft. I did it actually twice because when I went to put it back in I didnt get the wheel lined up right, so I put it in and took it out all with in about 30 min or so. Just make sure you have a good handle of the box because its heavy and if it gets loose it can hurt you. Have fun with this project you can do it!
