Hi All, I am a newbie to this forum. I have a1998 F-150 with a 4.6 v-8. I just had the motor overhauled. I am having a idle problem. When I come to an abrupt stop at idle or if I turn the steering hard left or right at idle the idle drops kinda surges then dies. If I turn the a/c on it helps a little. But if I turn hard it still dies. I replaced the I.A.C. & still the same. This problem does not trigger the check engine light to come on. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this problem? Thanks. Chief Mike.

welcome!
Seems like your missing or have either a vacuum leak or loose electrical connection...bad wire or ground...probably still from the Over Haul. recheck the connections ground to the frame perhaps? . betting that some thing will turn up along those thoughts.
Q: My truck idles roughly or stalls at idle. What could be the problem?
A: A fairly common idle related malfunction in these trucks seems to be the Idle Air Control valve motor. This valve sits on top of the throttle body and holds the butterfly valve open at idle so the engine can breathe. A sluggish or malfunctioning IAC will prevent a constant idle. The problem sometimes only presents its self when the engine in cold. This certainly isn’t the only thing that can cause a rough idle, but If you find yourself having to keep pressure on the gas pedal to keep the engine running, this may be a place to start. Typically, just cleaning doesn’t offer any improvement, if the IAC is faulty, it usually needs to be replaced.
For some pictures of the IAC take a look at Fordman311's gallery at https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gall...&albumid=14860
I'm a newbie here but have used this site to address these and various issues with my 2000 F150 4X4 5.4L 2v SOHC V8....after the IAC, PCV & elbow issue, vacum line, MAF,TB,IATS,CTS, etc..I couldn't get why my PCM would not settle in instead of "hunting" at idle...after many tries, my A/C compressor/clutch was cycling too often & cold starts, engine run ups from 30-50mph would not dial it in...but after keeping the temp. control settings on heat for that process, then A/C, then vent, it has now dialed in at 600rpms at idle in any setting without stalling on cold mornings. I did add 2oz or pag45 to address the compressor. Hope this adds to helping and not confusion...Anyones input is welcome and appreciated as to if this is why it worked or if I stumbled on a "magic" fix that I really don't know about. Good luck!
