I need to throw some rod bearings in my 360 and I think it's time for a new oil pump while I'm in there. The bearing have been knocking since I got the truck about a year ago. Havnt gotten any worse so they have been low on my priority list. My oil pressure has also been pretty low the whole time as well. It's always steady right at left edge of the flat line that runs across the bottom of the stock guage.
I'm a fan of running a high volume pump in a warn old motor. Are there any problems with that in a 360??
The melling high volume suggests a hardened shaft but the sealed power model doesn't. Is the hardened shaft a good needed reguardles??
Are u sure its the pump? first things first. Hook up a mechanical gauge and check it. However if your already in there good idea to change it. Regular oil pump is all you need unless your building a lot of power. All your gonna do is rob yourself of power with a high volumn. Its not needed. But thatsmy opinion.
if your rod bearing have been bad for a year then your crank will need grinding and rods resized ! HI VOLUME PUMPS ARE GOOD FOR LOWER RPM s , they are no good for high RPMs
as they can suck all your oil out of the pan and put it up in the heads !
if your engine is gonna stay stock then stay with a regular volumn oil pump. This is a case where more is not better. However a great upgrade to any FE is a high flow oil filter adapter which came on later model FE engines campared to their erlier model brethren. Im not sure of the years, maybe someone else can better direct you. I found mine on ebay. The oil passages are larger.
I'm good with keeping it a stock flow pump. The knock isn't to bad. It's deffinatly there and when I stay on top of keeping the oil roped off (the oil pan and or rear main leak BAD) the knock is pretty subtle. I think I can get away with cleaning the crank and throwing new quality bearings. If it fails I'll get on the ball with my other motor.
