Installing subs

I previously had my buddy install subs in my EX but my mom didn't like them so I took them out for awhile. Well the time has finally come where the car is in my hands so I reinstalled a sub and amp and wires all by myself. I had all the wires hidden well, and everything worked great until now. After furiously working to figure out why my amp wouldn't turn on all the sudden, I found the problem My power wire running to my battery... partially melted in the engine bay. Could someone please tell me what I did wrong here, and what is so hot in the engine that I must have run my wire near?

How is the wire run and secured? What type and size of fuse and wire did you use? Has the power wire ever been directly shorted to ground? The engine bay should not get hot enough to melt wire insulation. My guess is the wire was not secured properly and came into contact with something hot - maybe exhaust? If it didn't - having a hot wire hitting a ground can generate enough current and heat to melt the insulation as well.

I noticed that even when I cut that part out of the wire I thought "melted" the amp still didn't turn on. Weird... until I read this and it clicked that I shorted the wire and blew both fuses in the amp. Thanks for reminding me! I would have never thought of that. I must have inadvertently forgotten to disconnect the negative terminal in my battery when I was connecting a wire later in the day and I shorted my system by accident because the fuses were the last thing I even thought of checking. Thanks a lot for the help man!

If you dont solder and terminate your connections at the battery or fuse block...vibration can loosen your connection and heat up the fuse holder...melt...burning down the truck! I have seen it a few times and it is never good!

Glad you found it before something bad happened! Peace2Peep is right - make sure all of your connections are secure, heat shrinked or taped and of course - fused.
