I went to the bone yard today and looked at an engine that is suppose to be mine for rebuild. I can't tell exactly what the engine is (outside of it being an old FE engine). Hopefully you guys can help me identify what type of engine this is exaclty (told it is a 390, but didn't see the crank). Here we go:
The exhaust manifold has the casting number C35E9430B
The intake has C5AE042
Further, the is an exapnsion tank on top of the engine that is fed by the radiator and goes into the thermostat housing.
There is a "canister" style oil pump and fuel pump along with a really old looking power steering pump. I guess what I want to know is what year is this engine? Oh yeah, I looked to find a casting number on the front left side of the engine block and saw a number with an "L" I think. It was not a long number and was definately not 352 (this surprised me). I patiently await any help that may be offered. Thanks.
Well, some of those numbers aren't exactly the right sequence but reading through them and with the other stuff you said, I would guess it's an old 390 out of a Tbird.
I have already bought a 390 builder engine and when i got home it was a 410 I didnt make out clean on the deal the block was cracked but hey the crank was worth the price :0) If you can try and look up the vin number to the car. Otherwise the only other way to be sure is pull the oil pan off and get the crank casting # they did put 352 4v's in those t-birds
There was another interesting thing I noticed abut this engine. On the back, there is a tube that comes up from the intake and goes to the back/under the carb (into what looks like a 1" spacer). What pray tell is this mechanism? And the oil filler hole is a tube that goes doewn into the block in the front-right. There are no holes in the valve covers at all.
