I tow a 5th wheel with my 2004 F250 PSD. It has the tow package. My question: If I leave my 5th wheel plugged into my truck, while stopped somewhere, Can the truck batteries be affected by my using the trailers' 12v system?
You could only drain the truck batteries if you left the key on (and motor off) while using the trailer. If the key is off, the circuit is open (I believe there is a relay under the hood) and thus, you are only using the trailer batteries. Usually, if the key is on, I would assume that the truck is running, and in that case, you shouldn't have to worry about the batteries either as the alternator would take care of any additional load from the trailer.
Exactly. Over the summer I installed a 12V outlet in the bed of my truck. I tapped the "charge" line for the power and tested it to not be live with the key off.
It's an excellent place to get 12v in the bed of the truck for different accessories. I am using it to power the relay on my air bag compressor, and also for my rear view camera. Don't have to worry about anything draining the battery because it's only hot when the truck is on.
