What's the proper operating range?

Just curious, what's the proper operating range for oil and tranny temp, both for normal driving and towing? I wish the LCD screen would show the temps in green is you're good, yellow for caution, and red for over heating. It has colors for other things.

Just from personal experience (not from any solid technical reference), normal opeating temp for engine oil seems to be just about 195*F and trans right about 165*F when unloaded. When pulling my fiver, I see about 200*F oil and 195*F trans. If it goes more than 10% over what I consider normal, I get concerned. HTH

That's about what I'm seeing too. Pulling our 37' TT I see about 201 oil and 195 tranny.

My truck stays at 204 plus or minus 4 degrees when I drive (interstate w/8K work trailer) on the oil. Trans stays at 197.

Temps this morning outside were low teens and I still ran at 204 all day. I have seen 213 I think, that's probably the hottest my truck has gotten.

Interesting that you guys have temps that are a good amount lower than mine.

When driving empty I see around 205 EOT. When towing on the highway in 20-40° temps with 6,500 lbs behind me I saw between 210-217°.

In our comparison meet in Ohio mine got as hot as 226° F EOT.

And that's why I wish the temps were in color!

The digital readout may not be in color, but the analog coolant temp and transmission temp gauges in the cluster will indicate when things start to get a bit warm.

The operating range is pretty large on these engines. Both the 6.7L and my previous 6.4L liked to run at 195° most of the time. The cooling fan won't even come on in a 6.4L truck until it gets to 220°!

Trust me, the truck will let you know if things start to get too warm!

Yeah, I would bet money that the only way anyone is ever going to overheat one of these 6.4 or 6.7 motors (stock) is if something is wrong/broken. I think it's time to get a DashDaq or something though. I'm starting to get really curious about water temps, regen status/EGT, engine load, etc.....

I read in the 6.7 overview book that it does passive regen when EGT's are above 500 I think? That's really cool and explains why some of us go many hundred miles w/out an active regen.

The thing that bothers me is we can have permanent passive regen if we moved the DPF assembly closer to the exhaust, perhaps right after the turbo.

I back of the enveloped a new DOC / SRC integrated into a small device right after the turbo that is actively cooled that can be made much smaller, and because it is operating hotter, can also use less platinum.
