air/fuel mixture too rich,adjust mixture screw in a little? choke half closed, check choke!
Idle set low shouldn't make it run rich but may have to raise the idle a little to compensate for air/fuel mix! rebuild carb??.....hope this helps.

Wrong or too big a carb, I bet
That engine originally came with a 2 bbl carburetor rated at about 350 CFM. Since you have a 4bbl carburetor, it is highly likely rated at too high a flow rate for your engine. What brand is it, is it a Ford original, and what is the CFM rating? If you have the model number, post it here too.
