Fellas,
How long should a valve cover gasket last? Mine on the drivers side seems to be leaking around the very back tab if you know what i mean, the little tab for installing on the cover. I cleaned it and it came back so obviously leaking. They arent hard to change but ford only gave me one year. So its on me to change. How long should i expect? did ford mess it up if it only lasted a bit over a year?
I don't know how long they should last, I would assume a while...but I have to say mine are leaking after a year also...passenger side rear area.
I think they were the cork ones, what are yours?

ford factory black rubber? i think haha. I am going to get some felpros and call it good. Cheap and easy as hell without a turbo on haha.
first thing i did was check them to see but they were good. These things sure do rattle though haha. when i reinstall i will probably use a moderate to mild thread compound. this will take no more than 30-40 mins if something goes wrong. But as you know i will probably paint them while i have them off haha. hmmmm what color to do....
Both valve covers on my 7.3 have been leaking for years, they are the originals, I never ever took the covers off.
The last year the truck was on the road, it was getting so bad that when you got on the highway, after driving about 5 min, it started smoking blue and smelling like burnt oil inside the cab, the oil was burning off the manifolds, had to roll down the windows when ever that happen and usually took around 5 to clear up, then it was fine.
The 6.9 on the other hand is a nice leak free engine, I did replace the valve cover gaskets 7 years ago when I did the head gaskets, but they hadn't leak before, and the new ones haven't yet either.
