My 1950 F68 is going in the paint shop in two weeks. The shop owner has given me a choice of a base/clear process, or a process (I think he called it 'one step'?) where the color coats are the top coats. In either option he is dismantling the truck to individual parts, stripping to bare metal, and placing coats of appropriate primer. Apparently the second option is more similar to the original style of painting the truck. What are the advantages/disadvantages of the different processes?
I'm leaning toward the base clear for the cab, fenders, etc.; and using the second process on the running boards and utility box (the box is rather utilitarian and not particularly smooth, it is constructed out of 1/4" plate and will tend to be used roughly, probably scratched up by loading and chains, etc.; and I figure I would wear the clear coat off it).
You gals and guys are always a great resource. Thanks for any advice. Regards......Keith.
I have used the one step paint on both my attempts at painting. Both turned out real nice, but one I only kept for a year after and the other was painted 2 years ago.
My uncle used the one step process and the paint started to lose its shine after about 6 years.
The bc/cc system will offer better UV protection and probably last longer. The depth of the shine will be deeper and it will be less likely to show scratches. The single stage will be more similar to the original paint finish but it will be much more durable.
Most folks doing pure restorations tend to go with the single stage. Others, who like the chrome and deeper shine, go with the two-stage paint, and of course there are the pearls and candies!
If you are going to go through all of the expense of having your vhehicle repainted I would spend the extra for the Bc/CC System. If you get slight scratches can be sanded and buffed easier as well as providing better UV protection and longer lasting.
