95 Explorer, temp quage redlining!

I replaced the thermostat on my 95 explorer approx. 1 year ago. Is there any way it needs replacing again?? On my way to work today the temp guage red lined on me. I blasted the heat, which brought it down, but obviously I need to get to the root of the issue.

The coolant reserve is full. Fans are running.

Beyond that, I'm clueless!

Thanks!!
Cathy

I suppose it's possible, but you might check the simpler things first like pressure testing the cap to make sure it will allow the system to build sufficient pressure. Since it's been a year since the system was open it shouldn't be trapped air.... You could also make sure the engine coolant temperature sender is in fact reporting the correct temperature. Maybe the sensor is out of range.
