So Im new to diesels and Im looking at purchasing one. I have been searching craigslist and found a couple trucks in my price range but they all have around 170k to 200k miles. Im wondering if I am asking for transmission and injector troubles when purchasing trucks at this mileage.one of the trucks Im looking at is a 2000 f-250 crew cab short bed with an auto trans and 198,000 miles and it is completely stock. the owner says that the transmission has been maintained properly so no need to worry about failures. But at this mileage isnt it almost guaranteed that there are gonna be problems?
Thanks for all your help

There are plenty of people that have auto's that have been 250k-300k and still have the original tranny. Others that have modded their truck might 150k out of them. I have a handshaker so i'm probably not much help
I would not be too worried about those miles if the truck looks like it has been taken care of.Drive them and ask for maintenance records.
Just like any machine, they will break, and they are going to break.

There are no guaranties when we roll out of bed in the morning. The years of '99-'03, 7.3 are very good trucks and I have seen and driven several with 500,000-600,000 miles on them (used to haul cargo 300 miles 7days a week) You will put money into this one or another truck. the 7.3s are really fun to drive and hold up really well. One of the best things that you have going for you is the FTE Family that is here. These guys and gals are never short on advice and if you want to 'Mod out' your ride, they will help you in many ways to spent your money on a truck that you will really be proud of. Don't let the miles scare you. If it sounds good and test drives good and the body is good, it should be fine. These trucks are also one of the most 'shadetree' mechanic friendly trucks. If you have any issues or problems or concerns the Family, here will help you get back on track. If the price is right, don't think that you are buying this truck 'alone', you have hundreds of family to help you out.
I havent test drove it or seen it in person yet. Im trying to go see it on saturday if everything works out. Here is the ad... sale-fy2sm-2150062350@craigslist.org
What is a good price?

I got 292,000 miles out of my 4r100 with the truck stock. That was replaciong it preemptively, because it was starting to show symptoms of failure.
If you have more than two people in your family, then you want the CrewCab and not the cub. The CrewCab has tons of room in the back seat for leg room and moving around. four people can sit in the back and not be crowded. The Cub, you will have your knees in your face and the people in the back will be very pissed on a long haul ride. I have a Crewcab and my brother-in-law had a cub. His wife made him get rid of it and went to a four door when they had their second child.
We have several 00-03 7.3's - haven't really found a good replacement. Have to remember these motors were orig designed for Bus and light OTR/delivery service type trucks by Navistar. 500k is the benchmark life for engines in this type of service. So getting one @ 200k isn't that bad just remember that's not to say it won't break but with help from the folks here and a little bit of elbow grease most anything can be fixed. The body & frame will wear out faster than the engine - we've put a 7.3 into an 06 chassis (not a drop in mind you) and this eng now has 230k of relatively trouble free running. We're fixing to do this same thing again using another 06 that we acq at an auction with a busted 6.0
Inspect what you get and you can tell a great deal about how it was maintained and run
