So I am driving home one night after work and I notice my instrument lights are not as bright. I also notice that battery guage is not quite as high either. So I decide to get home asap, then I see it falling even more, next I see the abs light pop up and then the hubs are starting to engage, so I stop immedietely. I call my wife to bring cables to see if we can jump it and gimp it back home. It wouldn't take a jump, probably poor quality of cables. I go ahead and pull the alternator and battery and have them tested, battery has an indicator that says its bad, but Autozone checked it and it passed. Alternator failed so it got replaced.
So I was taking it for a test drive the next night on the way to church, and it died at the light. It has died one more time since then and tried once in a parking lot I think. I didn't have to mess with any vacuume lines when removing the battery or alternator, and I have been reading about possibilities of the IAC, MAS, AIT, and just plain old vacuume leaks. Is there anywhere I can look for properly diagnosing these things?
Your battery probably has an intermittent short to one of the cells. I had the same problem with a 5 month old battery a few months back. It checked out fine a couple of times. The third time i had it checked, the test showed a fault. Advanced Auto Parts gave me a new battery and all is well.
These electrical systems are very sensitive. Almost everything works on milivolts. Another thing you will find is - when the alt fails - it often takes the battery with it.
I am kind of wondering about that, and it would be a quick and and easy fix to an otherwisw annoying problem. I have kind of noticed some surges, small one when coming home last night and it was idling down for the stop, it would go a touch dim, and when I took off it would brighten up, interior lights stayed the same, only headlights seem to change.
