I was looking for a mini spool for my 9" and was wondering, how many splines does mine have? I figure someone might know so that I don't need to take it apart to find out. Apparently there are 28 splines and 35 splines (or something like that).
Considering you are ordering a part and you can never tell what is really inside an axle until you take it part, just pull an axle. You can not get anything easier than a 9 inch.
Put one side on a jack stand.
Remove the wheel.
Remove the drum.
Take the (4) 3/4 nuts off using anything (like a 4 way tire iron - it fits!).
Pull axle about three inches out. Put one nut back on so the backing plate does not come off.
Center axle and pull out of tube straight so axle spline does not destroy the axle seal.
Total time: 20 minutes if you are real slow, putting the truck on the jack stand takes the most of the time.
Yup, pull 'er out & look. It'll either be 28 or 31 spline. You should jack the one side up enough to keep the dif lube from pouring out when you take the axle out, too.
When my trac-loc broke, I went to the bone yard and got an open 3rd member for $50. I put the mini-spool in the carier and swapped it with the broken one.
I did notice that there were more 28 spline carriers than 31 at this particular place, but that might be because the 31s are stronger and probably more sought after.
If you're gonna install the mini-spool, get a new stronger steel pin. I didn't, and haven't had any problems yet, but think I might get one just for the piece of mind.
The spider gears are held to the carried with 3 steel pins that also act as shafts for the gears to spin on. The steel pins are held in with reatiners. One pin goes all the way thru and the other two are short ones. When you put in the mini-spool, you use the long steel pin that connects the mini-spool to the carrier. They make heavy-duty pins for mini-spools because you'll have only one instead of the three.
Here's a picture of the spider gears and mini-spool when they're out of the carrier.
Ok, took the shaft out, 31 spline. You had me worried, though - I followed the instructions and the axle wouldn't slide out. Pulled out the manual, it said use a puller - so instead I just turned the hub around and put it on with a couple of nuts and yanked - out it came! So I'll order the mini spool and the pin. Any other info or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks for the help.
