A very easy install. For a truck with a few miles on it, the filter goes in the transmission return line between the cooler and the transmission. The return line in the one that runs to the back of the transmission.
Their warehouse is in Dallas, so I got mine the next day. $7.50 minimum shipping, so you might want to consider buying a couple/three to save shipping costs. They are supposed to be changed every 12 months/12,000 miles.
"What about the pressure drop when the filter gets dirty? Having 2 filters will lower the line pressure also."
The fluid pick up in the pan sucks through the factory pan filter. This filter is in the pressure line going to the cooler. There is a pressure drop, but a transmission engineer for Ford (Mark K.) stated in another forum that the drop going through one of these filters is not enough to cause any problem. However, the 6.0 PSD already has a cartridge type in-line filter and he recommends AGAINST adding one of these to a 6.0.
Another post by a Ford dealer transmission tech said that Ford RECOMMENDS installing one of these filter after major tranny work, and that he puts one in every time.
If you have more than about 5000 miles, the filter should go in the RETURN line between the cooler and the transmission (the line running to the back of the transmission). This is because you probably already have some gunk lodged in the cooler and you want to filter out the gunk before it can travel back to the tranny. If you have less than 5000 miles, put it in the pressure line running TO the cooler (runs to the front of the tranny) to keep the gunk from building up in the cooler.
I may have mispoke about the RETURN/OUT line location. I think that Mark K. actually said that if your truck had some miles on it or if you have had some tranny work, the put the filter in the RETURN line. Forget that 5000 miles thing that I said, must have dreamed that last night.
On a truck wit less than 5000 miles an no transmission failures install it in the line TO the cooler. This is the one from the front of the transmission.
If the truck has more than 5000 miles, or ever had a transmission failure install it in the line to the rear of the transmission.
This looks like a neat idea for a filter, am I right in thinking this is only a magnetic filter though? What about the particals that are'nt metal? Would a remote spin on filter still be better as far as the actual filtering goes? I have been wanting to do this for awhile now and this looks like an easy way to do it. Just looking for more opiniions
