reading tranny dipstick?

yeah, this is gonna sound kind of lame, but here goes....I just finished putting the fresh rebuilt c4 tranny in my 1978 f100. I put 4 quarts in before I started it, then 4 more quarts as soon as i started the motor. I went through the gears several times, and checked the tranny fluid. On one side of the dipstick, it reads over full and on the other side, it is just barely on the dipstick and not even to the add mark. it doesn't matter which way I put it in, I always get the same reading. Which reading is right? I don't want to fry the tranny because there isn't enough fluid in it....sorry for the silly question, but I just want to make sure I am reading the dipstick correctly...thanks, Ben

The side of your dipstick that is reading overfull is just picking up residual fluid from the dipstick tube. With only 8 qts. in I'd guess you're still low by 2-4 qts. depending on your pan, converter, etc, etc...
You won't mistake when you actually have an accurate reading on the stick.
