Hi guys i bought a new truck recently, 1989 7.3 N/A with a 145xxx miles, with only 15-20xxx on a new jasper E4OD tranny. I replaced the injection pump, injectors, glow plugs, coolant, oil and all the filters and it runs like a dream, just gotta get the timing set right and advance it 10 degrees or so (doin that wednesday). When i drive it it shifts through the first 3 gears just fine, but the overdrive doesn't seem to work at all. When i replaced the injection pump, i noticed there was a metal rod about 3/4" thick that extends from the tranny up the back of the motor, under the air filter and across the top to the throttle assembly. It connects on the arm as the throttle cable, just on the opposite side. After i replaced the injection pump, this rod doesn't want to connect, its like its tweaked or something. It was connected before to the other pump and when i drove it before i did all the work to it overdrive seemed to work. Does this rod have anything to do with this?? I talked to a local mechanic who is a genius with these trucks and he says that its like a kickback lever or somethin and doesn't have any thing to with the overdrive, anyone have any ideas? could it be a sensor or somethin, soleniod maybe too?
the e4od should all be electic i pretty sure he is wright that should not effect overdrive .look up thread for flips check yours and see i bet you need to adjust it or need a new one some one who knows more will have better advice
Um, you MIGHT have a C6 (3 speed auto). If you get under the truck, looking on the driver side you should see a electrical connector connected to the shift linkage, this is the MLPS. If you have this, you a E4OD. If not, you have a C6. Check this out first to make sure what trans you have.

8.5 degree's BTDC is fords stock recommendation.
some people go to 9.5 but be careful if you plan on going to 10,because likely she'll start to melt the glow plugs.
before i tore into the motor i was crusing home with it and it seemed like the overdrive was working, the rpms would run around 1700 at 55 or so, and now there running at 2300 at 55, and 2500 at around 60, so its definetly running a little high. Could it be a soleniod or linkage arm or somethin? thanks for all the input guys
Is there an Overdrive button under the gauges to the right of the steering column. An '89 should have the E4OD, but there isn't a kickdown lever, or at least there shouldn't be.
I looked for an overdrive button but couldn't find one, but ill double check, the tranny is a new reman jasper one, if that has any thing to do with it, maybe it came with a kickdown level on them??
There's really no way to add a kick down to the E4OD, it's controlled by a computer to do everything. Slide under the truck and look for 2 wire connectors, one on the passenger side near the rear of the trans and one on the driver side at the shifter. If you don't have those then someone swapped in a C6. You can also check the driver side of the injection pump, if you have an E4OD there should be a TPS hooked to it. If there's only some tubing then it's the vacuum control for the C6. Can you take a picture and post/link it?
i think '89 was the first year, where you could have the old 3 speed slipper,or the overdrive locker.
im not sure though on the year.but i think thats what iv read.
it wasn't '90 though.so it must of been 88 or 89.so really,i think he could have either.
kinda seems odd he hasn't found out yet.
if he's running the old 3 speed, waiting for her to slide into the next gear,he could be waiting a while.
