having some trouble with my 2003 4x4. I have the electric 4x4 shift and when turning it to engage 4x4 H or 4x4 L nothing happens. No dash light, and no click noise that i would normally hear when shifting into 4x4. I've checked the fuses that i know about and none were bad. From what I've read it seems that it could be the GEM that controls the 4x4 activation, possibly a relay (under the oval in the dash?) or the shift motor. Anyone have any solid ideas on what is broken?
Respectfully, why are you just up and spending money yet worried about the cost of GEM module?
It it to much trouble to check to see if the motor is operating as opposed to removing it and replacing just to see the same thing, before spending?
Good luck.
I did actually check the shift motor and it isn't working but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is at fault. Could be some relays, GEM, the switch, or something i don't know about. While I'm not happy about throwing $100 down on a part I'm not certain is broken from what I've read it does seem to be a common failure point in the system. Additionally, it is very easy to install (4 bolts and plugging in a wire harness).
