I know that the XJ's up till 86 work well, but what about after? Has anyone used an 87 and up and had the same results? I see a lot of 87 and newer on the CraigsList. Getting harder to find the pre 86's.
Just wanted to say welcome! I was just looking at ur pics. Nice truck! I put a jag in my 49 its a 79 xj6 $300 and it looked new when I got it.
I can't answer ur question about newer models but would like to keep track of your progress. I am a long ways from finished! So again Welcome!
The later XJ series, the XJ40, is a different subframe. I haven't seen anyone using the XJ40 with success, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a great fit on something. The series III xj6 and xj12 are known to work and are popular, and that's what I'd focus on. If you decide to explore the XJ40, you'll be breaking new ground, but I'd love to see what you accomplish. BTW, when replacing the lower ball joints on the xj6, use the XJ40, one piece ball joint instead. It's interchangable as a complete unit, and is a modern sealed design. Look at the stock multi piece xj6 part and you'll understand.
Thanks rhopper, thats good to know. I had no idea. Do you know if there are poly kits available for the series III IFS ? I want to replace the bushings before I put it on the road(long ways off). My uppers are a little dry rotted.
I've got poly steering rack bushings. Apparently it's a high failure rate item with the standard rubber bushing, but the polys last forever. AFA poly for the other bushings, I went with stock rubber for the smoother ride and they're cheap. Lots of ebay sellers deal in jag performance parts, and IIRC, several had poly upgrades available. Companies such as Johns Jags (or johns something) specialize in high performance upgrades for xj6's such as sbc motor converstions. I borrowed a catalog from a buddy who is into e type jags and remember seeing xj6's set up for road racing, so the parts are out there. Also, look into the jaglovers forum, the "lumps" section. If you think we're alittle nuts about our trucks, go hang out with the guys at jaglovers. Wow.
