Just got back a while ago from fire up my 2 IDI's witch are stored for winter.
They both never stop surprising me
The 6.9 motorhome I was expecting to fire rigth up like it had ran minutes before, and that it did! Glow plugs stayed on for a solid 15 seconds, cranked ~2 seconds and started chugging to life, man was she ever noisy! Cold advance after sitting 2 months! Little puff of grey/black smoke upon start up, cleared up right away.
7.3 F250, took 2 cycles, glowed for 12 seconds both times, and fire up right away on the second try. Cranked ~10 seconds first try. Good amount of blue/grey smoke on this one for about a minute after starting. Cleared up, running like a champ! Nice and smooth
What really surprised me on that one is the 2, 8 year old batteries that are in it cranked it no problem!!
7.3 has been sitting for 3 months, was ~ -12*C (10*F) outside today.
Not really an important thread, just felt like sharing how reliable IDI's are supose to be
haha nice man im pretty proud of mine haven't had any starting problems out of mine all winter either except for a bad battery back in november.... but that wasn't the trucks fault....
just discovered a lil leak in my lower radiator hose today though got a new one on order.....
I know my truck makes me smile when it's a cold morning!
No need to worry about a block heater on these IDI's. With a good fuel system and good glow plugs, you're good to go!
What's the deal with the F250? Are you still going to do a restore on it with fresh sheet metal?
Last weekend had to go pull my dad's cummins out of the ditch at dang near midnight, i went out to start the beast and noticed right off the bat my freakin blue heeler chewed the cord off leavin a couple inches of extension cord a couple inches below the plug on the block heater, i hadn't started it in close to 2 weeks, the highs have been under 10* and getting close to -20 at night so basically thought i was screwed, cycled the glow plugs twice and she fired right up, gotta love the old idi's!
When I cycle my GPs the light only stays on for about 8 seconds then goes out. If I shut the key off and try again, it goes out immediately. How are you guys gettin 2 or 3 cycles out of ur GPs?
It was 20* this morning when i started her, and id say it got to the single digits lastnight. I assume some of my GPs are bad and im looking into ordering new ones to replace all 8, motocraft/beru of course. Id say she turned over a good 15 to 20 seconds before starting today.
When you do more than one cycle, don't turn the key off, and right away on again.
Cycle onces, when the light goes out, turn key off, count to 10 then cycle again. Should stay on for another 10 seconds on the second cycle also.
Ill have to try that out, i had been just turning it back on without waiting. She will fire right up if i leave her plugged in over night. I bet it dosent even get a full rotation before she is running. Thats how I know I must have a few bad GPs.
WELL! I too have a testament to how reliable these old IDI's are. My dads old '86 F-250, a tired old 6.9l with 475,000 miles on it. I put a solenoid in it, two batteries and some fuel. That was all it took. Granted I was taking only a few feet to start dismantlement of the engine for her turbo because of a blown head gasket. After 3 cycles of trying to start....after not running in 4 years. She rumbled a little bit with it only being 4*F outside the first two times....the third time, she rumbled a little more and fired up for the first time after so long. Amazing I was in shock and awe. Granted i moved her as quick as possible because of the head gasket.
Just another testament to how reliable these trucks really are. I have a 7.3l with an ATS turbo 093 engine sitting in the garage, siezed crankshaft...thinking of rebuilding it. and putting the old 86 back in service because of this.
