trans temp

i noticed the other day when i was driving my truck the trans was only getting to 125 and this was after a 20 min warm up and a 40 min drive (outside temp around 0) on the way home home same drive, only got to 130. is there some sort of thermostat in there or something? what should the temp be running at after fully warmed up? i was usually sitting around 151. truck is 03 with 160k

There is an internal thermostat that's supposed to be a 165* but fairly difficult to change. It's possible it's a bad sensor, but with those cold temps.....

where is a good place to find some instructions on doing it? i guess my biggest concern is is it hard on the trans or anything not having it at operating temp?

IIRC the thermostat is in the pump, so it's a "major" repair. I'm not convinced it's the thermostat itself as much as the sender, which, IIRC, is problematic anyway.

with a aftermarket bra/cover/blanket im only up to 150 after a least 1/2 hr driving, in 0 degree weather. I don't think a cool tranny is a bad thing.

hmm. i just remembered i did change a sensor for i believe temp in it already. a couple years ago while i was driving i noticed my trans temp guage was maxed out. i pulled over and checked fluid and it was good. my uncle did some research and tracked it to a possible sensor (cant remember what it was called) but i replaced it and it fixed the problem. do you think this would be the same sensor? it was just above the internal trans filter.

Just for grins and giggles, have you tried reading the temp. with a different gauge? I'm not convinced that you have a problem (except for the 0* outside temps--LOL). Brrrrrrrrrrr

Check the temp with a lazer pointing temp gun tool.

All I get is my edge insight. Just got it a month ago. I'll have to dig around and find my temp gun. So shouldn't be anything to be worried about?

With the outside temps and not towing it would take an hour or better to get much higher. I say your good to go and don't worry about it. Incidentally that sensor is the tft sensor.

In the morning, compare all 3 readings - they should be close together:
EOT, ECT, TFT. My TFT is always cooler in the AM than the ECT/EOT
- I would speculate because it doesn't get as hot during my commute
and thus cools off more than the ECT/EOT.

Normal ECT/EOT is 190+, while my TFT is rarely above 150.
I agree with the others, unless you tow or disable Overdrive,
your TFT won't get very high
