Pollution Pump??
Hey guys ...
87' F-150, 4.9 EFI
Still haven't resolved all those performance problems I posted
about a few weeks ago .. but now I have an even MORE PRESSING PROBLEM ......
This FRIGID NJ WINTER appears to have take it's toll on my
POLLUTION PUMP ... it's locking up and screaming like there's
no tomorrow .... I've WD-40'ed the crap out of it and I carry
a breaker bar and a BIG HAMMER in my cab and if I whack it
hard enough I can get it to spin again ....
but here's my question ... I read I don't really need the damn
thing in the first place (except maybe for emissions testing :-)
so .....
1) Can I really just disconnect it .. and do I have to plug the
hoses ... or make any other changes??
2) If I do disconnect it does anyone know of a different/shorter
serpintine belt that I can use??
That should cover it ..... and I didn't forget about all the good advise I got about my performance issues and as soon as I
get a chance to install the 'restrictor plate' etc ... I will post
again to let everyone know how that went .....
Thanks in advance,
doc brown

Pollution Pump??
You can take out the smog pump, put a shorter belt on and plug your ports in the head and cat convertor but keep in mind that your computer will probably give you a check engine light. Also, state emmissions inspections, if you do not have them now, stand by, they are probably coming.
Pollution Pump??
Thanks for the advice ....
Yes we have 'emissions laws' here in NJ .. all of our
emission inspections are now done on a 'dyno' ....
which put a lot of the 'smaller' guys out of the inspection
game because they couldn't afford the equipment ...
but I can 'work around' that :-)
and I've ignored plenty of 'check engine lights' in the past ..
so no problem there ....
So can anyone recommend a shorter belt out of like an
Escort or something ??? guess I could run a string from
pulley to pulley and then measure the string and then
try to get 'close' to that at the local auto parts store ...
but it would be nice if someone could just tell me to buy
a belt from a 92 Taurus or something ......
Anyone else have any input???

Doc, take a string, measure the belt from where it looses contact with the pully before the smog pump to the point that it starts contact with the pulley after the smog pump. Do this with smog pump in and then again without smog pump. The difference in the two measurements will be how much shorter your new belt has to be.
