CAUTION DO NOT DRIVE WITH BAD INJECTOR

I want to share an experience I had with my truck in hopes of keeping others from making the mistake I did. I was 150 miles from home when I noticed my truck had a rough idle and seemed not to have normal power starting off from a dead stop. Once I got going it seemed to run fine except when accelerating I noticed black smoke. I decided to return home and carry it to my local dealer. The last 100 miles of the trip was on interstate and everything seemed OK except I began to see a steady stream of light black smoke. When I got off at my home exit the black smoke started pouring out the exhaust and it had a very loud knock. I thought my motor was gone. I had it towed to my dealer’s shop. The shop called the next day and said an injector tip had come off and could have caused damaged to the cylinder wall and/or piston. They recommended replacing the injector ($1440) and driving it to see if there is any problem with the motor. I told them to go ahead with the repair as I trusted the advice of the technician working on the truck. The shop called the next day and said my truck was ready and seemed to be running fine but could have damage that may show up later. I told the technician I was concerned about the injector tip still being in the cylinder and he said the tip had probably broken into tiny pieces and was embedded in the top of the piston. He said the tips didn’t usually cause damage, the over-fueling is what causes the major damage. I may have lucked out this time but if I have these symptoms again I’m calling the tow truck. My truck is a stock 2005 F250 CC with 84,000 well maintained miles.

Be real careful where you get replacement injectors.

The remans are all over the map in quality --- but Ford remans to be sure.

Do you know how many hours labor was charged for the job? $1,440 sounds like a very high number to replace 1 injector.

Seems to me that it is the same story different truck with this 6.0. I have a project 6.0 that has me thinking of scrapping the whole van just to keep it from ruining the next owners finances some day!! It seems that all I have to do is fix all of the enineered in problems @$4500 then replace the injectors @1300 and hope for the best!!!!!!!!! Today this all feels like a joke being played on me. This engine has no redeeming quality that comes to mind like ease of maint, cheap parts, reliability, or cheap on fuel. All it is to me is an underdog which I am naturally drawn to!!!!

I changed out 1 injector yesterday in my garage with only basic hand tools and knowledge gained from this great website. The job took me about 4hrs in and out. I bought a ford reman I got em to sell it to me for cost at $253.00. I will never pay for a injector install again. It was incredably easy. Hardest part was just getting to the valve cover.

This is the cost break-down
O-ring kit 3 x 6.46= $19.38
nozzle assembly Remfg $307.69
Tube-fuel supply $63.03
Hardware-misc $20.50
Control unit $230.89
total parts $641.49
Labor $722.70
TOTAL $1374.19
State Tax 39.99
local tax 13.33
Total Charge $1442.88

Labor does include diagnosis. I would have loved for it to have been less but I didn't know of any other reliable options. Just hope it holds up. The fuel filters have been changed every 15000 miles and oil filters every 5000 at the dealer since new. I have owned the vehicle for 5 years & 9 months and this the first real money I have spent in repairs. It did have the oil & EGR coolers replaced at 60000 miles and two oil leak repairs under warrenty. They did tell me the tires needed replacing soon. I replied that they were the original tires when the truck was bought new and its a shame that the motor has not held up as well.

Looks like while incredablly expensive. Your mechanic is very nit picky. The 3 other o- ring kits tells me he pulled and checked all 4 injectors on 1 side. Replaced 1 and cleaned and put the other old ones back in with new seals. The only questionable thing on that whole bill is the line that says control unit for $230.00. Unless that's a Icp sensor who knows.

Looked up the part # for the control unit. It is Glow Plug Module Assembly. Can be ordered for $122.39. I need to learn to do my own work.

I had a similar experience. Heading out on a 400 mile trip pulling a 7000# camper. It was dark out and just happened to notice a cloud of fog in the mirrors after i passed a car in the highway. Pulled into a truck stop within a mile and heard a clunking sound from the motor. Smoke was pouring from the exhaust, then there was flame coming out the exhaust. Shut it off and camped the night in the trailer. #1 injector let go, they did a compression test and all was good afterwards. They had another 6.0 in ther shop with the same thing that melted a piston the same time mine was there.
