Aux Fan or Blower

1987 F150 4.9L. There is a small fan or blower on the side that blows air into a tube and this tube sends the air onto each injector. I've heard this fan run only a time or two and it runs after the engine is turned off. What is the purpose of this fan?

Subford --- thanks for the reply. I'm no mechanic and I always thought that vapor lock was only associated with carbed engines. How does this prevent vapor lock?

It blows air onto the fuel manifold.
Only the 4.9L engines had this.
