96 f250 4x4 powerstroke trans interchange
Does anyone know what transmission will fit my 96 powerstroke 4x4 ive been told 96 only its all by itself ,Seems there should be something out there that will be a direct fit , to my 96 powerstroke,any ideas or info will be greatly appreciated.Has anyone ever put a differant tranny in there 96 powerstoke?

Mine's a '96 and the tranny is out of a '93 IDI. If it came off a 7.3, it will fit a 7.3. Just to be clear, the ZF6 from the SD's will fit the engine, but will take some fabbing to make it fit the truck. Not too sure about autos.

Do you have an auto and looking to replace it with another auto? If so... Like said above, Any 7.3 E4OD tranny will work for you. Also, the 99-03 4R100's will also work for you.
If you are trying to swap in a manual, Its a little more work but you can use the ZF5 or ZF6 with a little space making.

Yes my tranny is a automatic and want to replace it with automatic,everyone at scrap yards are saying 96 only in your reply above you said yours was a 96 also and it came from 7.3 idi was it a direct bolt in?

you might be better off having it rebuilt or buy a new one then dealing with a used one if it's been used for heavy towing then it's mosts likely on it's last leg already

an e4od from any 7.3l will work. so will the 4r100. They aren't as durable as the newer autos so id be wary to buy used. Best bet would be to get yours rebuilt by someone GOOD. These trans are also notorious for being a difficult rebuild. Get a shop you are truly confident with. Also look into upgrading the torque converter and valve bodies while at it. And if you keep the e4od then a 4r100 pan is nice since it had a drain plug. Also make sure if you get used it for a4x4.
