So I felt like my 2000 7.3 PSD 4x4 Excursions front end was a bit dated for my taste. I thought about doing the 05-07 front end conversion but decided I was to going to buy the headlights and grille and try my hand at making a custom front bumper instead.
I want to make a step/winch style front bumper out of steel. I do not plan on ever needing a winch but I did want to make it strong enough for the shackle mounts that will be welded to the front. I do plan on adding fog lights in the bumper.
Here is a bumper I like the look of. . . minus the grille guard and winch (fab four made this bumper)
What thickness should I use for the metal? I was thinking of using 3/16" or could I get away with 1/8" with reinforcements?
its all about how thick you want it.. I like using 3/8" between the frame rails and 1/4 for the rest. but I overkill most of my designs. a piece of frame rail from a semi works well for the center piece... done a couple that way. One suggestion for Dubbs rear bumper is to leave more space between the sheet metal and the bumper so if someone hits it and you get some flex you don't wrinkle up the sheet metal on the bed.
thanks for the replies, I picked up some 3/16" steel today, so hopefully I will have some photos to share of my excursions transformation by the end of the month
