Hi,
I have a 63 Fairlane thats been sitting in my garage for the past few years collecting dust. Lately I've been kicking around the idea of dropping it on a 4x4 ford frame. My question is, are there any full frame mid size, fairly recent 4x4 trucks out there. I havent done anything like this in quite a while. Any doner vehicle suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
step one. sell car on craigslist to someone who wants a car.
step two. take the money and by a truck.
trars are ridiculously goofy creations, but if you must do this, first measure the wheelbase and go from there. chances are a 78-79 bronco or shortbed pickup will be the closest match and the easiest chassis to work with.
p.s. don't forget to post pics of this abomination which will most definitely have a 10'' body lift and a metric **** ton of booty fab. have fun with that
Like DAN said, find out the wheelbase for the car and then go from there. Again, broncos/rangers/b2/eb might have something close. If not, probably any late 70's truck would be easy enough to chop down to the right length.
Such negativity.......There are those of us that actually know how to fabricate without using a metric **** ton of Booty Fab like they do in Utica, Il.
Seriously, Its just an idea. I do have to admit that there weren't many of them that actually looked good. I did see an Opal GT once sitting atop a 4x4 frame that had been shortened to the point where the front and back tires were almost touching. That had to be one great riding vehicle.
Fairlane: 114" WB. 78/79 shortbed pickup: 114" WB. If you are plannning on parting out this Fairlane, I'd be interested in taking your engine mounts, seat tracks, and clutch/brake pedals/parts if so equipped. But I would look at just building a 4x4 truck, myself.
Havi,
I doubt I will part it out, It will go whole. I've had it for 12 years. It now has a fuel injected 5.0 and AOD among other things. I was forced to leave it outside for a few winters, so it needs some TLC.
around 15 years ago, one of the local good old boys put an OLD honda civic body on a jeep frame, with a 454, turbo 400, and twin shortened dana 60's together for a mud bog runner. ran pretty good once he put the radiator in the back window and the air intake through the roof.
after he got tired of that, he put a 63 falcon body on a first gen bronco frame with stock 6 cylinder running gear.
he drove that around for a year or two as a dd before he got tired of it and parted it out. then he got a real job, bought a new pickup, and quit building stuff
Alright, if it has an engine replacement already, it wouldn't have the original motor mounts anyway. Not to mention 3sp. parts. But seriously, I would consider either selling it outright, or save the car, and just buy a beater 4x4, and build that up. My 2 cents. The price for the 4x4 driveline parts would equal what it costs to just buy a truck anyway.... in other words, the truck body would be free.
The original motor mounts are there, I just added some extensions to make them fit the newer 5.0. If I remember correctly, the orig. block had a 6 inch mount and the later 289 and 302 had a 7 inch spacing.
