Hi I have a ford f250 XL and I'm having problems putting gas in it at the gas station. when i start putting the fuel in it seems to come back up through the pipe that goes to the tank. I've heard from other people that it could be the air vent and that its either kinked or clogged. I'm planning to drop the tank this weekend to fix this but would like some opinions on this task or if it could be something else any help is appreciated thanks/
You should not have to drop the tank if it's the common vent tube problem. Just take the clamps loose, and the 3 screws, and take the filler assembly out.
Inside the big rubber hose is a smaller plastic hose. The smaller plastic hose has a clip inside the large metal filler part that holds it in place. It usually falls out and the fuel starts splashing against it.
Also make sure the plastic tube inside is still there. Some people don't understand it's function and mistakenly take it out. It keeps the air coming up out of the tank separate from the fuel going in, to keep it from gurgling which will also make it hard to fill and make it keep shutting off the pump.
P.S. I assume you have a gasoline engine. The diesels have their own set of problems like this and the fix is a little different.
